The Black Care Experience Conference 2023

On Saturday 11th February 2023, we’ll be hosting our 2nd Black Care Experience Conference.

We’ve chosen the Theme: The Culturally Competent Workforce, to come together and explore what it really means to be ‘culturally competent’ and whether being ‘culturally competent’ can help to improve the Care, Outcomes and Life Chances of Black Children and Young People in Care.

The Conference will consist of a Workforce Panel from within Children’s Social Care, who will share their views and accounts in line with the theme.

The Panelists are:

  • Antonia Ogundayisi – Service Manager for Anti Racist Practice for Essex County Council

  • Jacquie Burke – Group Director Children and Education for Hackney

  • Darryl Pottinger – Foster Carer

  • Vivian Okeze-Tirado - Winner of the Social Justice Advocate and overall Social Worker of the Year 2021

You’ll also hear from our Black Care Experience Care Leaver Panel, who will share insight into their lived experiences of journeying through the Care System.

The Panelists are:

  • Matthew Page

  • Mana Gondora

  • Rebecca Olayinka

  • Queenie Chizea

You’ll also hear the Black Care Experienced Journey expressed through the Creative Arts, with Guest performances from:

As this is a Workshop style conference, our Founder Judith Denton states “This is a space for like minded people who care about the lives and futures of black children and young people in Care, to come along, engage in shared learning, and be sparked to take action and make a difference”.

About The Black Care Experience

Established in 2020, Our vision is to see that every Black Child and Young Person remains connected to their Culture, Identity and Heritage as they journey through the Children’s Social Care System, across the UK and Worldwide.

Black is defined as a Child and Young Person whose Ethnic Origin is either African, Caribbean including Mixed Race with African or Caribbean Heritage.

Our vision is made possible by bringing together an inclusive Network of diverse Children’s Social Care Workforce and Voluntary Sector Workforce within Children’s Social Care, to improve their systems and practice by learning from the Lived Black Care Experience and Black Family Members who have had experience of Children’s Social Care.

The Network also provides a space for best practice to be shared.
